A teaching just came to me- when a medieval weapon, like a sword, is tempered the metal gets harder and becomes more durable. When weapon like a sword is tempered it is heated to a high temperature and then rapidly cooled in water, when this happens the internal structure of the steel is changed! This came to me- we tend to go seasons of trials in the "valley" and other seasons of victory on the "mountain top". There is a parallel here- while this is happening God is tempering us! When we are going through trials we can feel the heat, are getting heated, then when we experience victory and are on the "mountain top" we are getting quenched! The process of heating makes us "harder", but the quenching is also necessary to prevent brittleness, without the quenching we would become brittle and shatter when God is using us as a weapon, in spiritual combat!
